Post Polio Syndrome – a challenge of today Polio Conference

Post Polio Syndrome in Europe

60% of people who have had polio will develop Post Polio Syndrome.
THIS CONCERNS APPROXIMATELY 1 MILLION EUROPEANS
Very few medical practitioners today have any training to diagnose and treat polio or Post Polio Syndrome correctly. Post Polio Syndrome has only recently been recognised as a long-term medical condition and many people with polio themselves are unaware of its effects. With increased travel to and from countries where the rate of vaccination against polio is known to be low, there is a real danger of renewed outbreaks in Europe.

The EPU

The EPU works so that people in Europe with polio and Post-Polio Syndrome have all the resources they need to lead full, active, independent and integrated lives, and for a world in which polio is completely eradicated
The EPU facilitates and improves dialogue between Europe’s medical community and polio/Post-Polio Syndrome organisation and interest groups and aims at enhancing communication and co-operation among these organisations

Objectives

  • Encourage European doctors to come together to develop uniform guidelines to diagnose PPS and to conduct further research in conjunction with patient groups.
  • Help to gather data on the prevalence of polio and PPS in Europe.
  • Collect and share amongst all people with polio and PPS in Europe, knowledge, experience and best practice of living with the disease and signpost information to health and allied professionals and polio organisations within Europe.
  • Encourage relevant bodies and governments in Europe to ensure that polio immunisation levels are sufficiently high to prevent further outbreaks.
