Welfare Grants

The British Polio Fellowship has always aimed to award welfare grants to assist people with polio living in the UK.
Why are grants given?
Grants may be given towards items needed because of a person’s polio. Sometimes equipment or adaptations may be necessary because of the effects of the original polio, deterioration in the polio or Post Polio symptoms, or other health needs. Sometimes there may be changes in people’s lives that require specific assistance.
Where do the grants come from?
Some needs may be met by statutory provision, through local Social Services, housing departments, the Social Fund, wheelchair services or Motability for example.
Welfare grants may also come through Central Office and the Branch network, because funding cannot be readily sourced or fully funded via statutory sources. If we cannot assist or fully fund a request we have a list of other potential funders and may arrange to do a computer “Funderfinder” search for you. We often work with third party funders for the benefit of members.
What are the grants for?
Small grants may be given towards the following items:
  • Equipment like scooters, electric or manual wheelchairs, riser/recliner chairs, specialist beds or mattresses
  • Home or car adaptations
  • Other household aids or equipment to enable independence or enhance quality of life.
Very occasionally, one-off grants may be made to prevent crisis or for essential home improvement.
Heating grants - stay warm this winter
People with polio often experience cold intolerance, which may be extreme. In addition higher oil prices are driving up the cost of fuel, and people on low incomes are struggling to keep their homes adequately heated.
People with polio who do not qualify for the Government Winter Fuel Payment can apply for the Fellowship’s Heating Grant each autumn.
Annually The Fellowship gives around 400 grants averaging £80 each to people with polio who are under the age of 60. Judging by the letters of thanks we receive, it makes a real difference.
