Do I need a Polio vaccination if I am going abroad?

There are three types of virus that can cause Polio. Even if you have been infected with one type you could still get another. So, if you are going to a place where there is a risk of getting polio you should have a Polio vaccination or booster to make sure you do not get it again.

You will also need to consider any other vaccinations or medications that are recommended for the place you are travelling to.

Your GP or practice nurse should be able to advise.

For more information see Immunisation

Did you know?

Anybody planning to travel to an area where polio is occurring should receive a booster dose of inactivated polio virus. Immunity following a booster dose lasts a lifetime.
