Birmingham City Football Club is paying tribute to one of its most respected figures, Jeff Hall, with the release of a limited-edition replica of the club’s memorial clock to mark World Polio Day on 24 October.
Hall, who joined the Blues in 1950, made 227 appearances and earned 17 caps for England during a distinguished career that was tragically cut short in 1959. Despite feeling unwell, he played in an away fixture at Portsmouth in March of that year. Just two days later, he was diagnosed with polio and sadly passed away a fortnight later at the age of 29.
His sudden death sent shockwaves throughout the country but also left an extraordinary legacy, sparking a dramatic rise in polio vaccinations across the UK, credited with saving thousands of lives.
In recognition of his impact, Hall is one of 12 former Birmingham City players immortalised in the club’s 150th anniversary stained-glass window. The Jeff Hall memorial clock, originally unveiled in 2012 to mark 50 years since his passing, has since become a poignant symbol of remembrance for both the club and its supporters.
Supporters can now own a faithful replica of that iconic clock, with only 50 pieces available priced at £25 (plus P&P). All profits from sales will be donated to the British Polio Fellowship.
Kripen Dhrona, CEO of the British Polio Fellowship said “Jeff Hall’s story is one of courage and inspiration. His legacy extends far beyond football, and this initiative is a fitting way to honour his memory, while supporting those living in the UK with the late effects of polio and post-polio syndrome.”
