The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a warning as temperatures are expected to rise sharply in the coming days, potentially reaching highs of 33°C. This spike in heat could lead to an increase in deaths and a higher demand on health services, prompting the activation of heat health alerts.

While many enjoy sunny weather, high temperatures can pose serious health risks—particularly for vulnerable groups such as polio survivors and those living with disabilities. In response, the British Polio Fellowship is advising members of the polio community to take specific precautions during the heatwave.

People affected by polio should be especially cautious when moving around, as heat-induced fatigue can increase the likelihood of falls. If possible, they should stay indoors, keep cool, and limit physical activity. Swollen legs can also be a concern; in such cases, keeping the feet elevated is recommended.

One of the most significant risks during hot weather, especially for older adults and individuals with health conditions, is dehydration. To stay safe during extreme heat, follow these key tips:

  • Drink plenty of fluids and avoid drinks with caffeine or excessive alcohol.

  • Keep curtains closed in rooms that face the sun to help maintain a cooler indoor temperature (if it’s cooler outside, consider stepping outdoors).

  • Avoid direct sun exposure between 11am and 6pm.

  • Wear loose, breathable clothing that allows for air circulation.

  • If you need to go outside, stay in the shade, apply sunscreen regularly, and wear a wide-brimmed hat.

  • When travelling, always carry water with you.
