An active supporter of the polio charity, Aidan Linton-Smith was twice a Trustee of the British Polio Fellowship and a true fan of the sport, Boccia.
Aidan, who had been ill for some time, died of cancer on Thursday 5 January. He was 65.
After contracting polio age three weeks, Aidan was left with weakness in his arms and legs and later in life suffered like many, from symptoms caused by the late effects of polio.
He worked as a Probation Officer, specialising in court work at Westminster Magistrates in London and also provided reports to the Crown Courts in England on defendants living in Central London.
In 1991, Aidan was appointed a member of the Disability Qualified Panel to the Appeal Service and dealt with disability benefit appeals, many of which included Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Attendance Allowance and Disability Living Allowance (children).
A Games Maker for Boccia at the London Paralympic Games in 2012, Aidan had a passion for the sport. He frequently represented the Home Counties North region at the British Polio Fellowship’s annual National Indoor Games competition and held the title of Boccia Champion for several years.
Aidan joined the British Polio Fellowship in 1979 and stood as a Trustee from 2004 to 2014 and then again 2016 to 2022. He also held long-term positions as the National Treasurer, Treasurer of the Inner London Branch and Chairman of the Home Counties North Region.
“I met Aidan three days after I started at the Fellowship, when attending the International Dance Championships and what struck me was, how friendly and welcoming he was towards me. He was passionate about ensuring the Fellowship remained sustainable and resilient, and used his extensive knowledge in helping to make that happen. A fine gentleman who will be missed” commented Kripen Dhrona, Chief Executive Officer at the British Polio Fellowship.
